The State of AI in the Legal Industry 2026. Get the report here.
69% of lawyers use AI. 43% of firms have no rules for it. That gap is your opening.
I just finished pulling a year of legal AI research into one report, and one number stuck with me more than any other.
It is not the adoption figure, though that one is dramatic. In a single year, the share of legal professionals using general-purpose AI for work jumped from 31 percent to 69 percent. Count any AI tool at all and you are at 92 percent. That argument is over. Lawyers use AI now.
The number that matters is the gap underneath it. While lawyers adopted on their own, 43 percent of firms still have no AI policy and no plans to write one, and 54 percent offer no training. Your associates are already running client work through consumer tools. Your firm just has not said so out loud. That space has a name, shadow AI, and right now the firm is carrying the risk without controlling the practice.
